ONE-ON-ONE: Charlotte's New Mayor Dan Clodfelter Talks Budget, Jobs and Economy

Posted: Updated:
Well talk about a busy first day, Dan Clodfelter, the city’s new mayor says he didn’t have time for lunch.

He talked to us about the airport, jobs, coal ash as he headed straight to a budget meeting talking about transit projects as well as road improvements for the city.

“The mayor is a leader but not a dictator. He doesn’t tell the council this is the laundry list when you’re done. It’s his job to help the city council and to help them with the city’s priorities,” said Dan Clodfelter.

For day 1 on the job as Charlotte’s mayor, it was time to get straight to business.

Clodfelter presided over a budget meeting with city council leaders.

“Budget is critical – your budget is where your real priorities are. I have a lot of catching up to do.  They’ve had 3 workshops. I am not to speed on it yet but I’m a quick study and I think I’ll get there,” said Clodfelter.

Charlotte can count $18 million in revenue. That’s a 3% increase for its 2014 budget.

Now, Dan Clodfelter will have to keep pushing the city forward.

“I think we follow on sound financial management we have for decades,” said Clodfelter.

He plans to maintain the city’s AAA bond rating – which is like the city’s credit score. That means your taxes would likely not go up.

“This state has one fourth of all the local governments for AAA ratings. We have a solid foundation everywhere in this state – we’re not in jeopardy,” said Clodfelter.

He wants more federal funding for transportation projects like the Blue Line extension.

“I am going to plead for them and hope that we may find a receptive audience,” said Clodfelter.

But he says bringing and creating jobs is a top priority to boost the economy.

“This city has become a phenomenal place for advancing manufacturing, high tech, energy – those are the foundations of a vibrant economy,” said Clodfelter.
