I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

Charlotte, NC -

Niners for Planned Parenthood, a student group at UNC Charlotte, hosted their first ever SlutWalk today.

The first SlutWalk was held in Toronto in 2011, and was prompted by comments made by a police officer about rape and sexual assault. He said "women should avoid dressing like sluts".

The purpose of this event is to promote the philosophy that blaming victims of sexual assault for the way they look or dress should not be tolerated.

The walk winded it's way through campus, drawing attention fron students with loud chants and eye-catching outfits. It ended at the Student Union, where several very brave speakers shared their stories about sexual assault, addressed the issue of rape culture and told the crowd why they decided to participate.

What is rape culture? According to these students it can be anything from making jokes about rape and using the word in an inappropriate way, to making women feel like it's their fault or that the assault they experienced wasn't really rape.

Niners for Planned Parenthood President Mary-Wren Ritchie says she was motivated to organize the event by her belief that society doesn't take rape seriously enough and that adequate attention is not being paid to the issue. She believes events like this help to abolish rape culture once and for all.
