Durham, NC (CharlotteKnights.com) -- Scott Carroll allowed just two unearned runs over six innings, Tyler Saladino continued his hot-hitting with three hits and three RBIs, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Durham Bulls 8-2 on Tuesday in game two of their four-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC. The win was Charlotte’s fourth of the season and it moved them into sole possession of first place in the International League South Division through the first six games of the season.
Carroll (2-0, 0.00) was solid for the second time this year. He allowed four hits and two walks on the evening and has not allowed an earned run over his 12 innings pitched this year. The Kansas City, MO native opened the 2014 season for the Knights on April 3 and allowed just five hits over six innings pitched on that day.
The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Jordan Danks – his first of the season and 37th of his Knights career. Danks finished the game 1-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs.
Overall, Charlotte batters ripped 12 hits on the night and scored a season-high eight runs. Saladino extended his hit streak to five straight games and had a big night at the plate on Tuesday. The California native went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and finished just a home run short of the cycle. Matt Davidson also had three hits and finished the night 3-for-5 with a run scored. Blake Tekotte added two doubles on the night and the Knights had five doubles as a team on Tuesday.
Reliever Deunte Heath allowed one walk over two scoreless innings in relief of Carroll. Zach Putnam did not allow a run in his only inning of work for Charlotte.
The Knights will continue their series against the Durham Bulls on Wednesday for game three of the series. RHP Andre Rienzo (0-0 0.00) makes his second start of the season for Charlotte, while the Bulls will send LHP Enny Romero (0-1, 9.00) to the hill. Coverage starts at 6:50 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. as the “Voice of the Knights” Matt Swierad will have the call on ESPN 730 AM and WRHI (1340 AM and 94.3 FM).
The Knights return home to open BB&T Ballpark on Friday, April 11 against the Tides. The inaugural season at BB&T Ballpark kicks-off with a party in Romare Bearden Park at noon on Friday, April 11. BB&T Ballpark gates open at 5:00 p.m. and first pitch of the team’s first game in Uptown Charlotte is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
