(WJBK) - Testimony began Tuesday in the jury trial of a Salem Township man accused of having a sexual relationship with a teen from Plymouth Township.

Robert Messer, 37, is facing several charges of criminal sexual conduct and one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes.

The first person to take the stand was the 15-year-old alleged victim.

She testified Messer began kissing her when she was ten years old, and that the two began having sexual relations a year later. The teen admitted she eventually became pregnant and had the baby two months ago.

The teen went on to testify that on October 27 she and Messer ran away together with the purpose of killing themselves. She says they ended up in a park in Salem where she slit both of their wrists. Police eventually found them.

The teen's mother also took the stand.

The mother went on to say her daughter gets anxious if she is separated from her mother for more than a few hours.

Messer has been in jail since his arrest last fall. He could face up to life in prison if convicted.
