Abuse, neglect, mental illness, trauma: these words describe the early lives of therapeutic foster children - now in treatment through the Alexander Youth Network. What role does faith play in turning the lives of these children around?

Charlotte, NC - Students from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools gathered outside the Government Center Tuesday evening to voice concerns over transgender student rights.

Students attending the rally said they were hoping to grab the attention of CMS leaders and to get a seat at the decision-making table.

Many transgender students say they are concerned about the lack of freedom students are afforded to use the bathroom of choice, the bathroom associated with their selected gender identity.

Others want to make sure school staff is adequately prepared to deal with transgender students with sensitivity and understanding. Some voice concerns about bullying.  Students, like Contessa Cuellar, say they want the discrimination to stop.

Tuesday's rally comes on the heels of a similar rally held at Central Piedmont Community College last week.  The CPCC student says she was treated unfairly by a security guard when she attempted to use the women's restroom on campus.

During Tuesday's school board meeting, Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board members listened to the CMS students' concerns, and they're taking note.
