The Charlotte City Council has voted to appoint Senator Daniel (Dan) Clodfelter to complete the term of former mayor Patrick Cannon, who resigned following his arrest March 26 on federal corruption charges. Clodfelter's term runs until December 2015.

Upon learning that he was selected as Charlotte's new mayor, Clodfelter said, "You think about things like this and when it finally happens, you take a deep breath. Frankly, that’s what community has been doing is taking a deep breath."

Clodfelter said he was shocked by Cannon's arrest, but he adds that Charlotte has move forward, and he says his top priority is restoring trust in government. He said, "This is Charlotte. Nothing has changed about Charlotte."

Clodfelter has served as a member of the North Carolina State Senate since 1999, representing portions of Mecklenburg County. He will resign his Senate seat to assume the office of Mayor. From 1987-1993, he was a member of Charlotte City Council, and had previously served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission.

Clodfelter is a native of Thomasville. He attended Davidson College and was a Rhodes Scholar. Clodfelter earned his law degree at Yale University in 1977.

According to a press release from the City of Charlotte, Clodfelter served as law clerk for Judge James McMillan of the U. S. Western District Court of North Carolina from 1977 to 1978 after which he entered private practice with the firm of Moore and Van Allen in Charlotte, where he continues to practice law. He has also served as a Trustee of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation since 1982. Clodfelter is married to Elizabeth K. Bevan and they have two adult children.

The law requires members of Charlotte City Council to fill vacancies. The requirements are that the candidate be at least 21 year old, live in the city of Charlotte and be registered in the same political party as the person being replaced.
