Citizens are angry about having no hand in picking Charlotte's new mayor

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, NC - Charlotte city council voted for Dan Clodfelter to become the new mayor of Charlotte. The citizens who attended the meeting were upset they did not have a voice in the decision.

Wayne Powers stepped up to the podium saying that a special election should have been held to elect the new mayor.

"The voting public is demoralized because of what's going on here and the lack of responsiveness of our elected officials. Tonight was their opportunity to do something right," Powers said.

City council member Claire Fallon responded to the anger, saying if citizens trusted her enough to vote for her into office, they should trust her to make the right decision for them.

"If you want a special election, you do it way ahead of time," she said.

The vote comes just 2 weeks after former Mayor Patrick Cannon resigned after allegations of corruption. Cannon was elected in November and took office in December. After only 114 days in office, he stepped down after the 4 year undercover operation by FBI agents.

The council will now work towards restoring the people's trust in government. They just want the people of Charlotte to respect their decision.
