IRS: Two Scam Warnings

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

We have two warnings coming from the IRS.  The first one is what investigators call the "largest ever" phone fraud scam targeting taxpayers.

Thousands of taxpayers have already paid out $1m to callers posing as IRS agents.  They will threaten you and claim that you owe back taxes then demand you pay it back with a pre-paid card.

These are techniques investigators say the scammers use to trick you. They likely already know the last four digits of your social security number.  They send bogus emails to support their claim.  They call back claiming to be the police.  Hang up. Real IRS agents don't call you at home and make threats.

The IRS says the second warning scam comes to you through email. The email says it's from a legit organization - the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, and scammers offer a case number.  But, it's not really from them, of course. The government says it's nothing more than an email phishing scam.

Forward the email to the IRS:  phishing@irs.gov.  Take a quick look at the press releases from the IRS so that you are up to speed on these two tax time schemes.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
