Jon Dick Checks Out the Charlotte Arborist Association's 2014 Tree Climbing Competition

Posted: Updated:
The Charlotte Arborists Association (CAA) held their 2014 tree climbing championship over the weekend.  Arborists are basically tree doctors who focus on the health and safety of trees and the event highlights some of the skills involved.

“This event, it’s like a day at work.  We have cowbells up in the tree to simulate pieces of dead wood, climber has to come in, formulate a plan, go up there and do it.  They have 20 minutes to complete the event,” says CAA President, Scotty Olson.

Derrick Martin won the men’s competition and Josie Spagnolo took first place for the women.  There wasn’t any purse money for the winners, just prestige.

To some, the violence in Gaza seems a world away, but to one family here in Charlotte it is hitting far too close to home. Issam al-Araj and his family live in Charlotte, but his siblings and their children live in Palestine. His nephew, Mohammad al-Araj was shot and killed on July 24 -- his 17th birthday -- during a demonstration north of Jerusalem.
