Weddington High presents The Sound of Music

Posted: Updated:
It's arguably the all-time most popular musical -- The Sound of Music.

This weekend, students at Weddington High are putting on their own production of it.

"Rodgers and Hammerstein is a classic piece that people all know, they all know The Sound of Music," director and theater teacher Maria Moore said. "We have a new chorus teacher and we wanted to do something familiar...because it's such a big deal to work with someone else in this kind of capacity."

One of the biggest preparations Moore said they made was character analysis. In a musical like The Sound of Music, there are quite a few conflicting personalities.

The show takes place in 1938, in the town of Salzburg, Austria, under the threat of Nazi invasion.

Weddington senior Wesley Thompson plays Herr Zeller -- the head Nazi -- and accepted the challenge of playing "The Bad Guy."

It's a role he says he's not familiar with in his personal life, by any stretch.

"It's a really hard role for me to play because I'm a nice guy," Thompson said. "So to be  the mean guy that's yelling at people and trying to scare them, it's difficult."

Thompson, however, didn't forget to bring his sense of humor to the stage.

"Especially when you're trying to scare people at 5'2," he added.

Weddington will host their final two performances on Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.
