Super Hero Sighting Uptown: Mission to make Sick Kids Smile

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- When you think of super powers, window washing isn't necessarily one of them. But for the patients at Novant Health's Children's hospital, they might as well have been leaping buildings and saving the world.

"I was sitting in here and the window was open and they started washing the window," said Matty Nestor.

Matty, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, loves super heroes. His excitement was evident he watched some of his favorites wash the windows of the hosphospitale window washers do this twice a year at each of the children's hospitals in Charlotte.

"I've always liked super heroes. When I'm in the hospital, I like to read comics about Batman. I like Batman a lot," said Matty.

Justine Grimaldo brings her daughter here for her weekly treatment.

"When the kids come here, the treatment is not easy to deal with, but the nurses, social workers, and doctors treat you like family," said Justine.

You need that kind of support system when your two-year-old has cancer.

"These appointments aren't like 'doctor's appointments'. It's like playtime, movie time, social time, or time to meet Batman," said Justine.

The super heroes get to have fun too.

"It makes my day because I enjoy putting a smile on their face, seeing the kids happy, making them feel better even though they're sick," said Dayne Whitesides, who got to play "Superman" for a day.

A smile heals in a way no medicine can.

"It's definitely a lot better. I love it. said Matty.
