Local law enforcement officials want to make local citizens aware of a new scam that has taken many people by surprise.
Investigators say thieves, posing as Georgia Power customer service representatives, are asking citizens to go to stores, put money onto reloadable prepaid "Green Dot" cards and then they're asking for the number on the card.
This enables the thieves to use the card like a wire transfer and ensures they get access to your cash.
Georgia Power spokesperson Brian Green says, Georgia Power doesn't call their customers telling them they'll be "cut off." And that if customers have any issues they can call customer service who will be able to pull up information on their account.
Police believe the thieves have also been calling around claiming to be law enforcement officers demanding payment for past due tickets. Citizens are being urged to call local law enforcement in the event they receive any of these calls.
