14-year-old Escapes Attempted Abducting in Gastonia

HANNA'S STORY
A trip home from school turned into a scary situation for one Gastonia Middle School student.

14-year-old Hanna is an 8th grader at Bessemer Middle.

She says the last 24 hours have been surreal.

She says a masked man tried to lure her into his car by offering candy.

Hanna says she’s too scared to stay at home and is instead staying with her aunt.

Hanna says this is the 2nd time in the last 2 months this man has tried to attack her.

Police say it happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 2000 block of West Poplar Street in Gastonia.

“I don’t know. I thought I’ll never see my mom again,” said Hanna.

“Right after I got off the bus, he pulled up, asked if I wanted candy, I said no and he sped off,” said Hanna.

Police say the man followed the school bus, and when Hanna got off the bus he approached her.

Hanna ran to her neighbor, Joe Buckley’s house – he then called police.

“She was stuttering and all tore up about it,” said Buckley.

Those who live in the area they say they’re concerned that someone is trying to kidnap kids on what’s typically a quiet neighborhood.

“It scares me – my daughter is 9. This girl is 14.  Thank god she doesn’t ride the bus. You teach stranger danger to your kids but you don’t expect it to happen,” said Victoria Dickerson.

“The fact that I have an 11 year old sister scares me – that could be her,” said Maura Rayes.

“She didn’t take the candy but who’s to say that a younger child that does. It’s just really scary,” said Dickerson.

Hanna says it is especially scary for her – especially because of the man’s brazen approach.

“I think if he was brave enough to ask me questions, next time he’ll try to get me,” said Hanna.

GASTON POLICE REPORT

After 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on West Poplar Street a masked suspect attempted to lure a 14-year-old girl into his truck using candy. Initially the man was driving behind a school bus.

The girl got off the school bus to go home, and the suspect drove up to her offering her candy from a purple bowl.

The suspect is described as a white male with shoulder length brown hair and a white long sleeve shirt.

He was driving a four door black Chevy Silverado.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call GPD Detective Albert Fleming at 704-866-6878.

If you chain your dog outside and you live in Kannapolis, there are new regulations being put in place to ensure your pup is safe when you leave the yard.
