North Carolina Department of Transportation will consider taxing drivers by the mile instead of by gallon. This is in attempt to boost the transportation revenue.

The state's department of transportation has received the recommendation and will review it at a committee meeting.

Mark Foster, the agency's chief financial officer says they're considering any chang e that will boost the revenue.

"We are looking towards the future in terms of the efficiency and the appropriateness of our transportation system to support our economy," he said.

As vehicles become more fuel-efficient, the state is losing more money because it taxes by the gallon.

Taxing by the mile might fill the coffers for North Carolina, but drivers like Joseph Long are understandably nervous about the possible switch.

"I think people would go towards more fuel-efficient vehicles. They’re already a concern and people are trying to get them," Long said.

Foster says nothing is certain yet. They are at the beginning stages of looking at options. The committee will meet tomorrow in Raleigh to review the recommendation.
