President Obama campaigns in Ann Arbor for minimum wage hike

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) - President Barack Obama campaigned at the University of Michigan for raising the federal minimum wage, calling the proposal a "no-brainer."

The president first greeted students, congratulating the Wolverines on a great season, then got down to business.

The goal is to gradually raise the national minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 by 2016. Senate Democrats are planning votes on a bill, but Republicans are working to block it.

Obama gave shout-outs to U.S. Rep. John Conyers, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer and Senate candidate Gary Peters, plus three members of the Michigan basketball team: Nik Stauskas, Glenn Robinson III and Jordan Morgan.

His first words after landing at Willow Run Airport for the afternoon speech were, "Hello, Michigan! Go Blue!"

Then he had lunch with metro Detroit servers at Zimmerman's Deli, where employees receive wages above minimum wage.

Air Force One left again about 4 p.m.
