I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

There are no beautiful beaches or exotic volcanoes. But for these baseball players from Waipahu, Hawaii, Shelby, North Carolina is paradise. This team is in Shelby for the American Legion World Series. They've been to the tournament three times over the past four years and they say the stellar competition is what keeps them motivated to make it back year after year.

Glenda Woodson knows the importance of having a safe place to go. Woodson arrived at the Shelby Women’s Shelter a victim of domestic violence, but left with her faith restored and a set of skills than allowed her to reenter her community as a productive, happy member.

Women like Woodson are the reason for the bigger and better shelter they broke ground on today. After raising funds and preparing for year, the Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council announced to Shleby Shelbyhey're ready to move ahead with plans for the new shelter.

Cathy Roberston, Executive Director of Cleveland County Abuse Prevention, says there is a need for a more spacious shelter, with separate bedrooms. She says privacy is important for recovery for some of the women that use the shelter.

Roberston says she hopes the new shelter will be done within a year.
