School Resource Officers Added to Every Middle School in Rowan County

Posted: Updated:
Salisbury, NC - Middle schools in Rowan County now have school resource officers, after the positions were cut from the budget in the 2009-2010 school year.

The Rowan-Salisbury School System held a joint press conference Tuesday morning to announce the reinstatement of the middle school resource officer program.

The school system has enough state and local funding to maintain the program for two more years, and one of the assistant superintendents is hopeful they'll be able to extend funding beyond that time frame.

Local law enforcement agencies and school administrators say the resource officers not only provide safety, but mentoring for students.

China Grove Middle School Resource Officer Reese Helms said, "They (the students) need guidance, and they want that interaction, and if I can get one or two of them to not be in trouble and be successful, then I think we’ve done our job."

Do you think having a resource officer in every school should be school districts' number one priority? Why or why not? Email Robin.Kanady@foxtv.com or tweet us @Fox46Carolinas or @RobinFox46.
