CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. - More than 3000 blood drives were canceled across the Carolinas due to harsh weather this winter, according to a spokesperson for the American Red Cross.

"We really experienced an unprecedented winter," said Kara Lusk Dudley, American Red Cross.

Lusk Dudley says the lack of blood drives resulted in a shortfall of more than 50,000 units of blood throughout the United States. Now, the organization is working to schedule makeup blood drives in the Catawba Valley region.

"Anybody can really have a blood drive," she said. "We work with so many great organizations. Churches, businesses, big companies have blood drives, even if you have a small business. Some folks don't have enough space on their actual site to have a blood drive. So, when that's the case, we can use one of our mobile units.

"You never want to take for granted that blood is going to be available in the hospital on that shelf, when you or maybe a loved one is going to need it. Every two seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion. You never know if it's going to be someone that you love. A cancer patient, an accident victim, a little premature baby, those folks are receiving blood every two seconds. You could be helping someone like that at any given moment."

Businesses or organizations interested in hosting a blood drive can request more information and signup at redcross.org.
