CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The deadline to enroll for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act is tomorrow, March 31. As the deadline approaches, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that “more than 6 million Americans have signed up for coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces since October 1.”

Legal Services of Southern Piedmont held an enrollment event earlier today.

"Our motto is "A full measure of justice for those in need,""said Madison Hardee, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont. "Since October 1, we have been helping people get signed up for health insurance."

Hardee says her organization is working to help people from all walks of life.

"People that need it most. People with pre-existing conditions," she said. "People with young children. People that have had conditions that have gone untreated for years are finally getting affordable health insurance for the first time."

While the original enrollment deadline was set for March 31, that has changed slightly for people who have already started the process.

"Tomorrow is the deadline to enroll, but for those people who are in line tomorrow who have begun the application process, have given it their best try but are unable to complete the process, they will be given additional time," said Hardee.

According to HHS, people who do not enroll for coverage by tomorrow’s deadline could face a “penalty." The penalty for 2014 would equal “1% of your yearly household income” or “$95 per person for the year.”
