Winthrop Teacher Needs Your Help

Posted: Updated:

A teacher at Winthrop University needs our help. Mohammad Ali, from Bangladesh, came to Winthrop with 18 other international teachers in January. They were part of an annual exchange teaching program. The other 18 teachers returned to their home countries a few weeks ago.

But Ali, 37, was forced to stay. In January, his colleagues noticed a large lump on his neck. After going to the doctors, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas.

“I cried everywhere,” said Ali. “In my classroom, in my car….I was all alone.”

8,000 miles away from home, without his wife and daughter, and diagnosed with cancer.

“I could not sleep,” said his wife Saida Tahera.

Winthrop University stepped up and decided they wanted to help Ali.

They started a “You Caring” page to help raise money to bring his wife over for his surgery and his chemo.

They raised enough money to bring her. Now, they are trying to raise $15,000 to help pay for his treatment.

“I’ve seen a lot of people get cancer and they die in 2 months,” said Ali.

But not if Winthrop can help it.

“We can’t help him fight it physically, but we can help him get the resources to fight it,” said Graduate Student Ashley Burnside.

Ali is recovering from surgery on his neck to remove the lump and is preparing to begin chemotherapy in the next few weeks.

The American Legion is hosting it's 96 national convention in Charlotte this week. They're expecting between nine and 10,000 people from across the country. We caught up with the group that left behind the nicely air-conditioned convention center and took on the heat in South Charlotte.
