Last year, Ryan Newman won the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As you can imagine, the team was excited and proud of the accomplishment. That was certainly true for Catawba County’s Jason Jarrett.

CONCORD – In celebration of its 30th anniversary, 600 Festival organizers created three new events for the weeks leading up to the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Mayors from Concord and Kannapolis along with other city and industry leaders were on hand Thursday to make the announcement.

In conjunction with the Village Jiggy Jam event in Kannapolis May 9, the 600 Festival Association will feature two racing movies starting at 8:15 p.m. Union Street in Concord will host a parade of haulers May 15 at 6:30 p.m. Then, NASCAR drivers will compete in a 15-lap race May 20 at the GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville.

Jay Howard, president, 600 Festival Association, commented, “It’s always better if you can go to the community and partner up with on an initiative they may already be doing or they may have already been thinking about doing. Give them equity into the concept, and let them be a co-promoter with you.”

Jacqueline Gafrarar, 600 Festival general manager, also confirmed the musical lineup for Speed Street. Country band Thompson Square and classic rockers .38 Special will headline the event, with Michael Jackson tribute band Who’s Bad kicking off the street festival May 22.

“This is a neat opportunity just to bring some of the Speed Street type atmosphere into our local hometowns," said Marcus Smith, president, Charlotte Motor Speedway. "It’s important for us and something I think our fans are going to really enjoy too.”
