Hours after being arrested on federal corruption charges, Patrick Cannon has resigned his position as Charlotte’s Mayor. City Manager Ron Carlee confirmed via phone that Cannon submitted a letter of resignation effective immediately.
"In light of the charges that have been brought against me," Cannon wrote, "it is my judgment that the pendency of these charges will create too much of a distraction for the business of the City to go forward smoothly and without interruption."
Cannon's resignation comes less than six months after he was elected mayor. In a statement given prior to Cannon's resignation, the City Council stated that if Cannon resigned, they would appoint a replacement to fulfill his term.
