I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

Charlotte, NC - Crystal Robinson knows first hand how important it is for minorities to take the steps to become part of a bone marrow donor registry.

Her 13 year old son, L.J., has a rare blood disease that requires constant treatment, and his greatest chance at a prolonged life span is finding a bone marrow donor match.

Because of his background - Indian, African-American, Irish, Hispanic - finding a match has proven to be a challenge.

Addie Sanders is a Community Engagement Representative for Be The Match - a bone marrow donor registry - and she says the need for minority donors is high.

Caucasians make up about 65 percent of the possible donors in the Be The Match registry, while African-Americans make up only 7 to 8 per cent.

Hispanic and Latino people make up about 10 per cent of the possible donors on the registry.

Novant Health's lead physician at Blume Hematology and Oncology Paulette Bryant believes those low numbers can be addressed through education. Many people believe that joining the registry and becoming a possible donor is a long and painful experience, when in reality all it requires is a check swab.

When it comes to actually donating cells, it is often a very similar procedure to donating blood.

More more information on how you can join the bone marrow donor registry you can visit BeTheMatch.org.
