Rowan County, NC - According to Rowan County's planning director, Monday night Rowan County's Planning Board passed a measure that would allow concealed carry permit holders to carry a gun inside county buildings, except courthouses. Under the proposal, people with the permits could also have a weapon at county parks. County officials say the plan came up for discussion after the state of North Carolina made recent changes to gun laws.

County commissioners still need to pass the measure before it goes into effect. Rowan County Planning and Development Director Ed Muire tells My Fox Carolinas a public hearing on the plan is expected April 21.

Below is a story about the proposal from March 5, 2014...

The proposal was recommended by a planning and development subcommittee and now moves forward requiring approval from both the planning board and county commissioners.

Rowan County residents have mixed opinions on the subject.

“I’m against because we have too much violence going on now," Christine Clodfelter says. "And I have a gun, and it’s registered, but I wouldn’t want to take it with me. People lose their temper too quick.”

Sara McCubbins says she sees both sides of the issue.

“Wouldn’t it be a tryst to let the criminals know, the ones that do carry guns, that we are now carrying guns and have a little bit more protection," she said.

McCubbins also says she is concerned about people possibly getting upset with county government and seeking revenge with a weapon.

Rowan County Register of Deeds Harry Welch doesn't think the law is enabling.

“I think if somebody got mad about their taxes, they’re probably going to bring the gun anyway," he said. "Whether there’s a sticker or not a sticker, whether there’s a law or not a law.”
