Prepping for Prom: Hundreds of Charlotte high school girls get free dresses

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- Prepping for prom can be a nerve-wracking experience, not to mention expensive.

To lighten the financial load for girls who may not have the money to buy a prom dress, radio station Kiss 95.1 gave away dresses for free.

Hundreds of teenage girls lined up for hours in Northlake mall Saturday. They were waiting their turn to browse, try on, and pick out a dress for their upcoming prom. All the girls we spoke with said the wait was worth getting a free prom dress.

One mother came alone to pick out a dress for her daughter. The mother didn't have money to pay for a dress because she is unemployed. She came on her own because her daughter was working during the Gown Town giveaway.

Kiss 95.1 collects hundreds of prom dresses each year for their Gown Town event. This year, the radio station collected 2,000 dresses to give away.
