Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- Two women run. One has tears of joy, the other tears of sorrow.

The National Brain Tumor Society held its inaugural event on Saturday: A walk/run to raise money for research to find a cure.

We spoke with two women at the race. One woman lost her husband less than a month ago to a brain tumor. She came to the race with friends and family to support research for a cure.

The other woman we spoke with is a three-year survivor of a brain tumor. She is healthy and getting stronger each day.

The National Brain Tumor Society says nearly 700,000 people in the U.S. have a brain tumor. Many times the tumors go undetected for years.

According to the organization, brain tumors have more phycological, personality, and physical effects then other forms of cancer.

To find out more information, visit the National Brain Tumor Society's website.

To some, the violence in Gaza seems a world away, but to one family here in Charlotte it is hitting far too close to home. Issam al-Araj and his family live in Charlotte, but his siblings and their children live in Palestine. His nephew, Mohammad al-Araj was shot and killed on July 24 -- his 17th birthday -- during a demonstration north of Jerusalem.
