Amy's House in Lincolnton is a safe haven for women and children who are domestic violence survivors. Manya Heard is a shelter manager and says this place heals the open wounds caused by abuse.

"Once we have talked to them, prayed with them, mentored them, they'll start wanting to put on a little bit of make-up. So this little shy woman that one day came in, in a couple of weeks, she's starting to blossom," she said.

All the stories of the women at Amy's House can be traced back to one woman responsible for their progress. Vicki Lingerfelt has been part of this place since it started in 1995.

Lingerfelt has dedicated her entire life to helping others and now needs help herself. She's currently fighting cancer and she pegs any hope of survival on a bone marrow transplant.

Amy Houser, board member of Amy's House, says that Lingerfelt is the backbone of the organization.

"She's done so much and worked so hard, that it's time for her to sit back and be able to relax," Houser said.

Amy's House is asking the community for donations or to check to see if they're a match for Lingerfelt. The women say it's the least they can do for a person who single handedly helped them structure their lives.
