Same sex couples rush to marry before federal stay

Posted: Updated:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

Hundreds of same sex couples tied the knot Saturday before the federal stay was issued, halting gay marriages. In Oakland County alone, 142 gay marriage licenses were issued and 82 weddings took place.

The Washtenaw County clerk's office held special Saturday hours and crowds turned out for licenses and ceremonies.

"It's surreal. We couldn't sleep last night we were so excited about it," Connie Greer told Fox 2.

Hundreds of couples became part of Michigan history Saturday. Alexi and Jennifer were at the front of what seemed to be an endless line.

"We have been waiting for a lot longer than 5:30 this morning," Alexi Chapin said. "We've been waiting years for this -- it's going to be great!"

After the rush of excitement and activity Saturday morning, a federal court suspended gay marriages in Michigan at least until Wednesday. Marriages that took place are technically legal, but it's not known for how long. Stay with Fox 2 and myfoxdetroit.com for continuing coverage of this developing story.
