Hey, Hey Carolinas! I'm doing the job I love in the place I love, my hometown. I grew up in Concord and I'm grateful to be back home telling the stories of such wonderful people in and around the Charlotte area.

Firefighters pulled two children, a brother and a sister, from a creek Thursday night. The young boy died, and family members say his sister is in intensive care at the hospital.

Family members say 11-year old Randez Brown was protective of his brothers and his only sister, 7-year old Samiyah Brown. Damion Lee, the oldest brother, said, “He (Randez) was a sweet kid.”

Lee, is still trying to understand why an adventure on a creek off Griffith Street in Charlotte took his brother’s life and left his sister fighting for hers. Lee said, “He’s (Randez is) a hero. He didn’t make it, but still at least he helped my sister.”

Lee says his brother and sister were with some other kids playing in a tunnel when his sister fell into deep water, and Randez tried to rescue her. Lee says, “I tell the kids don’t go down there. Stop them from going down there.”

Neighbors say the creek, just behind the track at Marie G. Davis School is a popular place for kids in the neighborhood. Some neighbors tell My Fox Carolinas they want to find a way to keep kids out of the creek. They say holes in the fence surrounding the area need to be fixed. Patrice, a parent who lives in the area, said, “They (the fences are) all bent over, leaned, tore up. they don’t care. And we tell our children not to come down here, but they come anyway.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools tells us they can’t give us any information just yet about the fencing because they’ve been busy trying to help children deal with the tragedy.

The family's pastor, Barrington Johnson, said, “There’s no words that you can say that will make the situation better. All we can do is let the family know that we love them, and more importantly God still loves them.”
