Georgia Common Core fight appears settled for now

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Republican lawmakers appear to have settled a roiling fight over national education standards called Common Core.

Some Republican lawmakers in Georgia and other states have pushed bills to block the guidelines developed by the National Governors Association and adopted in 45 states. But the business lobby, Gov. Nathan Deal and top legislative Republicans support the plan.

So they instead attempted to appease Common Core opponents by approving a study committee in a Thursday vote, hours before the General Assembly adjourns for the year.

The panel of lawmakers, teachers and parents appointed by Speaker David Ralston will be charged with exploring the origins of Common Core and the federal government's role in Georgia's K-12 education system.

They will be asked to recommend any policy changes to state authorities.
