The Dark Side Of Spring Break

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - For most college students the month of March means spring break, a time that should entail some uninhibited fun after weeks and months of cramming and exams. Spring break is supposed to be a time to let loose, go somewhere warm with your friends and have the time of your life, but that is not always the case.

Sometimes a little too much fun can actually turn into tragedy as was the case for Steven Benvenisti who left TCNJ to head to Florida six-weeks before his college graduation. As he was walking across the road, a repeat drunk driver plowed into him at a very high speed crushing his legs, smashing his face and throwing his body 70 feet.

While Benvenisti lay in a coma, his parents were contacted to come down to the hospital and sign a release to donate his organs because he wasn’t showing any signs of recovery.

Well, luckily Benvenisti did recover and now he’s a personal injury attorney and author of the book “Spring Break: A True Story Of Hope And Determination”. He has dedicated his life to spreading his message and helping everyone stay safe.

“It was bad enough when I was in a coma and the doctors didn’t think I would wake up, when you wake up your finished cognitively. My short and long term memory was ruined. My reading comprehension level was that of a child’s, it didn’t look like I’d be able to walk again so it was devastating to hear that at the age of 21. So I made a promise to myself that if I was lucky enough to have a full recovery which was impossible then and even impossible now, I promise that in return, I’d spend the rest of my life doing everything I could to end drunk driving, to help people who are dealing with traumatic brain injury. I remained in the hospital for six-months, I had 15 surgeries and I was blessed with a full recovery,” he said.

Benvenisti explained the graphic details of the accident and his injuries and offered up advice for college students looking to head out for spring break.

“Make two promises today, right now, promise that if you ever have even one drink that you will not drive and if you’re around a friend that made the decision to drink that you’ll do everything in your power to stop them from drinking and driving,” he said.

Benvenisti donates all of his proceeds from his speaking engagements to various charities.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
