Christie: “I’m a Common-Sense Conservative”

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Governor Christie spent the day in Michigan yesterday attending Republican Governor’s Association events before returning home to the Garden State.

Christie just hosted his 114th town hall meeting in South River, New Jersey where someone asked Christie how he perceived himself. Specifically, does Christie see himself as a conservative or as a moderate?

“I don’t know how do you perceive me? I think the voters of New Jersey have a great sense of humor. Twice now you’ve elected a Conservative Republican Governor and at the same time given me a Liberal Democratic legislature. My job as governor is to make things work and so I work a lot of times with Democrats on the other side of the aisle and sometimes I have to compromise,” Christie responded.

Christie called himself a “common-sense conservative” and television and radio commentator Dee Dee Benkie joined in on the discussion about how the governor chose to identify himself.

“This is Chris Christie, he’s a rock star. I mean his polls were so good he was the only person beating Hillary Clinton before this goofy bridge thing which I think will go away actually. But he’s a leader. When you’re a leader it’s not conservative or moderate it’s making the right decisions and that’s what Christie has the guts to do,” she explained.

While Benkie considers herself a hardcore conservative, she also says that she doesn’t want a “wimp” in office.

“I mean look at what we’ve got now with Obama, we look so weak throughout the world, I think people are ready for a tough leader like Christie,” she said.

While there is still a lot of time before the 2016 election, and different polls are predicting very different things, Benkie believes that all Christie has gone through so far in his second term will only make him stronger.

“Look polls go up and down and they did with Clinton and he’s just a good example that he got hit-hit-hit, you go down a little bit and come up. I mean they’re polls, polls go on and off and up and down,” she said.

So the question remains, will the GOP nominate Christie for 2016?

On Thursday, Hillary Clinton made her one and only book stop in Ridgewood, New Jersey promoting her memoir, Hard Choices, which details her life as Secretary of State. This one stop ironically was on the same day that Governor Chris Christie was out of town in Iowa on several fundraising stops. Was his absence a coincidence?
