Shelby city officials and NC Department of Transportation are working together to tackle a traffic issue that's been in the area for more than ten years. Between Marion Street and Cherryville Road is the largest interstate congestion in the city.

Sheila Cobb of Folk's Cleaners, right next to the intersection, says although the traffic is good for business, the congestion can be dangerous for anyone driving down the road.

"We did have a customer hurt pulling out about a year ago. There was no vision. Their vision was blocked from the traffic, and they did get hit, and actually pushed down the road a little bit," she said.

The NCDOT says there is a possible solution on the way. The strategic transportation investment plan would re-align the intersection in order to improvement transportation.

David Keilson, Division Planning Engineer, says the congestion is caused by the traffic volume on either side of the road.

City officials say this is the most congested intersection in the city of Shelby, and small businesses can agree with that. They're just hoping the new plans can be implemented soon. The big problem is finding funding.

"There has been interest in fixing it in the past but due to the limitations of funding, we haven't been able to make that improvement. But with the new strategic transportation investment law, coupled with help from the city of Shelby, we have a new opportunity to obtain funding," Keilson said.

The number of cars traveling down the intersection has increased over the years and NCDOT says the daily volume could keep rising. If the project is funded, it could begin anywhere from 2016 to 2025.
