Charlotte, NC - Cam Newton's ankle surgery was successful, according to the Carolina Panthers organization.

Panthers team physician Robert Anderson conducted the procedure, that began at approximately 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

Per the team release -- “Dr. Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well,” says Panthers Head Athletic Trainer Ryan Vermillion.

The time-frame for recovery is expected to be four months. That would put Newton back on the field in mid-to-late July, just in time for Panthers training camp.

Newton had a very strong season in 2013, leading the Panthers to a 12-4 record, and an NFC South Championship. The Panthers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs.
