Teen Hopes To Bring Healthy Food To The Homeless

Posted: Updated:
Hoboken, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Jeremy Garriga is a 17 year-old Jersey City student at County Prep High School who has been working hard to improve the lives of Hudson County’s homeless.

Over the holidays Jeremy ran his second annual “Soxcess” sock drive for the homeless and now he is on another mission to start a culinary arts program.

“My culinary arts program will teach the homeless to cook healthy meals,” Garriga promised.

Because of this good deed, Garriga is a semi-finalist in the 2014 MetroPCS Leaders & Scholars Program. If he wins he’ll be awarded a grant for college as well as a grant that goes towards helping the homeless shelter with the culinary arts program.

Now he has to win the social media vote by uploading his idea to Instagram and getting the most likes.

“The grant will go towards the program I’m applying for which is my culinary program which will be attached to the Hoboken shelter,” Garriga explained.

The Hoboken shelter’s Executive Director Jacklyn Cherubini praised Garriga and his hard work to help those in need.

“I’m so impressed with Jeremy Garriga for applying for this grant with MetroPCS to help a culinary program develop here at the Hoboken shelter,” she said,

If Garriga wins, he’ll receive $7,500 in scholarship funding and the Hoboken shelter will get $10,000 to start their program.

The Instagram video is featured on the Metro PCS Leaders and Scholars website (www.leadersandscholars.com)

Be Sure to place your VOTE, Friday, March 21st through April 13, 2014.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
