Rowan County, NC - Rowan County Schools tells My Fox Carolinas it is considering a plan that would tack about ten additional minutes onto each school day to avoid having to schedule as many make-up days missed because of severe weather.

School districts already have days built into the calendar to use when classes are canceled because of bad weather, but many districts have already used up those days because of so much snow and ice this school year.

The state requires schools to have a certain amount of hours of instructional time. We put together some calculations, based on information given to us by Rowan-Salisbury Schools, and we found that ten minutes a day would add the equivalent of a little more than four extra days or 30 additional hours to the calendar.

The idea is in the early stages, and it would still need approval by the school board. We’re told a decision could come in late spring or early summer. Some parents say it may be more convenient for everyone’s schedules to add a little extra time onto the school day.

Theresa Dixon Nimene, an elementary school parent said, “The kids get out at 2:30. Then we have to be here by 2:45 to get them, so I think they need to add on.” Another parent, Tiffany Turner said, “I think it’d be better for the kids. That way they’d still get their spring break and their time allotted.”

What do you think of the idea of adding extra minutes to the school day to avoid fewer weather make-up days? We want to hear from you. Email
