Burke Co. Police Release Shooting Info During Officer Memorial

Posted: Updated:

Burke County Police have released more information in the event that led to the death of a U.S. Forest Service Officer.

Jason Crisp was killed on Wednesday in a shootout with double-homicide suspect Troy Whisnant, who also died. Burke County Police said that Whisnant shot himself in the head in addition to being hit by an officer.

Crisp's memorial service is being held at McDowell High School in Marion, NC. Governor Pat McCrory and members from several law enforcement branches, including a K-9 unit procession, attended the service.

During the memorial, his fellow officers remembered him as a practical joker and a good friend. Officer Wade Keener was often on the receiving end of Crisp's wit.

"The best thing about Jason (Crisp) was his love of people," he said. "He was absolutely the best friend I ever had, and I'm going to miss him and I love him."

Pastor Ross Lewis remembered the man for his commitment to family.

He said, "I don't see how Jason had as much time as he had to invest in his family, but he did."

Numerous songs echoed throughout the McDowell County High School gymnasium, with "Amazing Grace" being played by a piper to conclude the service. Crisp's wife and two sons were presented with flags by the Honor Guard.

A private burial followed the ceremony.
