Bike Safety Rodeo: Kids learn the rules of the road

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

The city of Phoenix, along with its fire and police departments, are hosting a series of bicycle safety courses to help keep kids safe out on the roads.

Phoenix police officers offer important instructions -- helping the youngest of valley residents learn the rules of the road.

"They told me you look right, left," said 8-year-old Cole Kessler.  The 8-year-old, along with his 6-year-old brother, participated in the bike safety rodeo Saturday morning.

"They're on their bikes practically every day," said Cole's father, Chip Kessler.

Chip and his wife Katie, like so many other parents, want the boys to know what to do when they ride -- which is quite often -- how to avoid traffic and stay out of harm's way.

"Always concerned because cars typically always go too fast around kids," said Katie.

Our experts say education is key -- that kids who take a course like this one are typically 10 to 20 percent safer.

"I think the more than we do this type of training, the better results we're going to have," said Donald Cross, city of Phoenix's school safety coordinator.

Cross says the course is quick.  Kids are taught which direction to look, how to use hand signals, what the signals mean, what you do at a stop or yield sign and go home with a new helmet.

"It was actually easy after I did it a couple of times," said Cole.

Cole plans to practice his new bike safety skills, which is exactly what first responders hope all the kids who came here do.

The city of Phoenix will hold several more bike rodeo safety events on weekends.
