Construction on Monroe bridge resumes this week

Posted: Updated:
The Department of Transportation covering Union County says the timetable to put in a typical, new bridge, is four to five months. This week, construction has resumed as we enter the ninth month of construction on a bridge in Monroe.

It's located on Corinth Church Road by Fletcher Broom Road. The bridge was scheduled to be completed on Nov. 27, 2013, but the Department of Transportation says the contractor they hired to produce the bridge made an error by inverting measurements.

The contracting company decided on building the box of the bridge (main-center area) and it's parts off-site in Raleigh and shipped them here to Monroe.

Once the mistakes were discovered, the previous bridge had already been taken out -- so folks living near the area were left with detour signs and a closed road, but no work being done on the present site.

There was also a miscalculation by those working in the field.

The bridge will cost up to $700,000.

Liquidated damages are now in effect for the contractor. March 23 is the deadline and each day following will be a $500 penalty. The contractor believes they will finish by March 25, but Garland Haywood with D.O.T. says he estimates it being closer to April 15 -- especially with all of the ups-and-downs of weather issues recently.

"Usually this is a four-to-five month process," Haywood said. "This certainly has gone beyond that and the department recognizes our responsibility to get the roadway back open."
