HARRISBURG, NC - Billy Mauldin is the president and CEO of Motor Racing Outreach (MRO), the faith-focused organization committed to connecting the racing world with Christ.

"Motor Racing Outreach is an organization that provides the pastoral care, church services if you will, to the NASCAR community," said Mauldin.

According to NASCAR team owner and MRO board member Phil Parsons, the key to MRO’s success is its people.

"They understand the sport and that really separates them, I think, from a lot of people in the fact that it's kind of hard to understand our sport a little bit if you're not in it on a day-to-day basis, said Parsons. “And, they get it."

Now, Mauldin’s work with MRO has presented a new opportunity through “American Idol.” He is now a spiritual adviser on the show, where he works with contestants to help them through the ups and downs of the competition.

Mauldin was contacted by former FOX Sports leader David Hill, who is now overseeing “American Idol.” Hill brought Billy and his wife Julie in to provide spiritual guidance to contestants.

"When David first called us about it, he said, "Keep this to yourself for right now,”” said Mauldin. “So, we couldn't really talk to a lot of people. So, I had to just sort of rely on research on the internet and stuff to try to get a feel for what it’s like for contestants that have been on the show in the past."

Mauldin said he soon realized there are many similarities between NASCAR and the popular show.

“I felt like I was with a lot of the young drivers in NASCAR that first get their big break, whether it's Nationwide or Cup,” he said. “And you're excited; you know your dreams are alive."

Parsons believes the move makes sense.

"Personally, I thought it was a great idea,” Parsons said. “It's very similar to what a young race car driver goes through. It's the most important thing in the world for them to make it in this sport. The most important thing for the singers is to make it on that national, international stage."
