Burlington Coat factory's EBT decision causing controversy

Posted: Updated:
For the last six months, Burlington Coat Factory has accepted a new form payment – EBTs. But not everyone’s accepted it.

“I am a single mother. I never had assistance.  If you don’t need it you shouldn’t be on it. If you do get it you shouldn’t be at Burlington buying clothes,” said Shawn Whaley.

“I found pizza places accepted EBTs and now the clothing stores?” asked Ashley Merritt.

“Some people are just shopping for themselves not their kids,” said Whaley.

“I don’t get the easy way out to live out of the government,” said Merritt.

Ashley Merritt used to receive assistance but didn’t use it for clothes.

“I used it at the grocery store for my family,” said Merritt.

“I work hard to put food on my table," Whaley said. "Some of these women are abusing the system.  It’s hard to see this for women like me."

“Their prices are expensive for someone on EBTs,” said Merritt.

“It’s not about the price – it’s the principle,” said Whaley.

Shoppers say those who use EBT cards should stop at consignment stores.

“It’s crazy to go to Burlington to go shopping. It’s crazy,” said Whaley.
