Mesa Police say a 15-year-old driver has been arrested after being involved in a deadly hit and run accident near Alma School and University.
Investigators say the 15 year-old was driving with a learner's permit with his friends when they tried to enter a Jack In The Box restaurant parking lot, striking a scooter.
The victim, identified as 22 year-old Mason Merrill, was critically injured in the accident. He was heading home from delivering a package.
Police say the teen driving the pickup truck fled the scene and returned to his home.
Witnesses took down the suspect's description and gave it to authorities who found the driver at his house.
Despite life-saving efforts, the victim died as a result of his injuries.
Jeremiah Alvarez, who rides a bicycle was surprised by the accident. "That kind of falls on the parents, what were they doing letting their kid drive, if they let him drive then it comes down to parental control," he said.
Merrill's family says they feel for the suspect.
"We feel bad for him a little bit because having something on his conscience like that.. we're not really mad at him or blame him for anything and that goes for my whole family," said Josh Merrill, the victim's brother.
The Merrill family tells FOX 10 that Mason was a faithful member of the LDS Church and returned early from his mission because he had cancer, which had been in remission for about a year.
Authorities have not released the name of the suspect in this case.
