Community stunned at local bank closing

Posted: Updated:
Community One bank is the only bank in this tight knit community in Enochville – just outside of Kannapolis.

“We are every single days and weekend to drop deposit. It was so convenient for us,” said business owner, Shailesh Panera.

“We live about a mile away. It’s just convenient,” said customer James Helms.

“This bank is helpful for the community. We are doing business for the last 11 years,” said Panera.

“This is the closest bank for me and it’s really convenient and lot of people are upset it’s leaving,” said Mobile Home Park owner, David Graham.

But on April 22nd – just 6 weeks away – the bank will close its doors. The bank’s president says poor profits are to blame.

“I’m not sad but I’m not happy about it,’ said James Helms.

“We really hate to see this closing,” Shailesh Panera said.

Many local business owners say they rely on it.

“We go to the bank and most of our customers use that bank,” said Panera.

“I come here twice a week because I have 30 tenants who pay me twice a week,” Graham said.

More than 300 people signed a petition to try and save it.

“There’s a petition that several stores have signed. But the petition wasn’t doing good because they have already made a decision,’ said Helms.

“What can we do – they said they are leaving. What can you do with a bank?” Graham said.

While the teller won’t stay around to greet you, the ATM will stay.

“We can use the ATM but if you make a large deposit you have to go to China Grove which is too far,” Helms said.

Some customers say they’ll take their banking business elsewhere.

“I’ll find another bank than China Grove,’ said Helms.

“I haven’t made my mind but I haven’t made my mind up,” said Graham.
