New video shows Fla. skydiver colliding with plane

Posted: Updated:

Karen Hensley did not see it but, she heard it.

"It was a very loud boom," she recalled.

When she glanced out the window, she spotted Sharon Trembley's airplane across the way. Then she ran outside to see how it happened.

"We didn't know a skydiver had been hit. We had no idea what happened. We were just saying, 'What happened?' We wondered how he did that," she said.

All of her questions were answered with the click of a mouse.

"I said, 'The camera over there on the end of the building may have picked it up,'" said Steve Michalec.

So Karen checked.

"When I came back in, I was like, oh my gosh," she said.

Steve Michalec owns Handy Can Portable Restrooms. It is right across the street from the airfield. Just a few weeks ago, Steve installed a security system and one of his surveillance cameras is aimed in the direction of the airfield.

"On a Friday or Saturday and Sunday, it is not big deal seeing planes and skydivers and anything. It is just after I heard the ambulance I thought, huh, I wonder if it saw that plane and that skydiver."

Seeing it on video, Michalec can't believe both the skydiver and pilot walked away with just minor injuries.

"It is just hard to say what happened when it did and why."

Pilot Trembley spoke exclusively to FOX 13, telling us the situation could have ended badly.

"If I hadn't have thought fast enough for myself, he would have been dead," said Trembley.

Michalec is just happy everyone's OK.

"There is an inherent risk I'm sure when you skydive that you accept. I guess a plane hitting you is not one of them."

A risk Michalec won't be taking anytime soon.

"I don't think I'd skydive over there. There is a lot of plane traffic and a lot of skydivers I'm thinking," he added.

The FAA and NTSB continue investigating the crash.
