Tucked away in a small industrial park in SouthEnd, there is a brewery that is making something a bit different than your ordinary brews. Lenny Boy Brewery makes some regular beers and some "wild ales", but it's bread and butter is kombucha.
Our food and drink expert Sarah Crosland recently visited Lenny Boy to get the lowdown on what's up with that.
"Kombucha is a fermented tea that is high in B vitamins and probiotics and is great for your overall health," said Townes Mozer, the owner and head brewmaster.
The twist is that at Lenny Boy, they take kombucha and brew it into raw, non-alcoholic drinks that are made with local fruits and vegetables. Some of the concoctions have names like Elite Beet (made with beets grown in Durham) and Blueberry Waffles (made with Carolina blueberries and maple extract). The brewery also makes some wild ales that also contain local fruits and vegetables, as well as some traditional beers.
Some of the kombucha drinks are bottled and available at Whole Foods and some local groceries. The brewery also has a small tape room where you can come out on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. There are plans for an expansion and added hours in the next couple of months.
Lenny Boy Brewery is located at 2224 Hawkins St.
