Derrick Crowder knows the Queen City like the back of his hand.

"I’m a Charlottean....been here all  my life," he says.

He's been a barber for more than 17 years. He's seen a lot in North Tryon area.

"I've seen a lot of change in the area," Crowder says.

But there's one change, Crowder hasn't seen.

"There is a big problem, because it is dangerous, trying to cross North Tryon street," he says.

A problem that became all too real Wednesday night.

"Lady walking up the breezeway here. I think she had on some jeans, a coat and a hat, a scarf on," Crowder recalls.

But, it would be the last time he would see her alive.

"Then, approximately around 6:30, i noticed they had blocked off all the streets from North Tryon to Eastway. I actually walked up there and seen a body, laying on the ground," Crowder remembers.

The body police later identified as 51 year old, Margaret Rutledge, a pedestrian hit while crossing North Tryon.

"She was in the median...well in the middle of the median, so that's like right in the middle of  the street, in between the two lanes."

There are no crosswalks at the intersection, something that concerns derrick.

"Overall, it is a big problem because you have a high school there, where children are trying to cross North Tryon Street on the other side to catch the bus," Crowder said.

He's seen kids as young as twelve cross the busy street.

"Well, a lot of them are running, you know just run to the middle and stop and then try to cross over."

Now, a family mourns a loss and CMPD needs your help.

CMPD is looking for a white Chevrolet cargo van that they say hit Rutledge.

It went right onto Old concord road....then, went north on Orr Road.

The van should have damage to the front and is missing the Chevrolet symbol on the front.

The front grill is also missing.

If you have any information on this case, CMPD asks that you call the Crimestoppers line at 704-334-1600 or call Detective Steve Williams at 704-336-8862.

Crowder hopes something can be done for pedestrians.

"Probably lowering the speed limit out here would be the best solution," Crowder said.

A solution he hopes prevents another accident.
