PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain reopened in January with a renovated trail and lots of improvements. One of the biggest changes was the parking lot which was expanded.

For years people who live near the trail complained that hikers were parking in neighborhoods but despite dozens of new parking spaces people are still parking illegally and now Paradise Valley Police are ready to crackdown.

Signs all over the area clearly warn people that at peak times parking and traffic can still be a problem. "We saw the no parking so we kept driving and we walked about a mile to get here," said Diane Bassan.

The parking lot can fill up fast so drivers have to wait until a guard lets them in. When one car leaves the lot another is allowed in.

"There is just a lot of people from out of town I think. So they want to come and hike. It is pretty good it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get in," said Carla Rivera.

The back up can stretch to the road which creates another problem, cars idling on the street waiting for their chance to get in.

Phoenix Park Ranger Cody Huggins suggests hikers use alternative transportation, "what we encourage folks to do is not to drive your car here. Get dropped off, ride a bike, take a city bus, any way you can in here besides bring bringing a car in here".

Ever since the Echo Canyon Trailhead reopened in January Paradise Valley Police say traffic in the area became a problem. "We started with public information, we put the word out, we had our officers issuing warning to people but the problems are still continuing so we are moving into an enforcement effort," said Lt. Mike Cole with the Paradise Valley Police Department. Authorities have already quietly started citing and towing illegally parked cars.

"You can hike here for free, you can park for free which is nice so you have to be respectful to the community and the fact that other people live here," said Kate Skoda.
