Troopers: Distracted Driver Caused Car To Hit Bus

Posted: Updated:
Trooper Mike Baker with the NC Highway Patrol says investigators believe distracted driving caused a car to crash into a school bus on Woodleaf Road in Rowan County Tuesday.

Melissa Rivers, an administrator and Director of Career Services at Livingstone College, was driving the car that troopers say crossed into the opposite lane of the road crashing into the school bus. Trooper Baker says the school bus driver reported seeing that Rivers appeared to have both hands off the wheel and that she reacted quickly to pull the car back toward the right side of the road just before the wreck. Baker says investigators don't know what the specific distraction was and that Rivers does not remember the crash.

Livingstone College officials have not received a recent update on Rivers' condition, but they say she was in intensive care immediately following the crash. She was airlifted from Novant Health to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem.

A Rowan-Salisbury school spokesperson says 28 fourth graders and two teachers from Woodleaf Elementary were on the bus at the time of the crash. Troopers say one child was taken to the hospital and was later released.

Investigators say Rivers has been charged with two violations, driving left of center and not wearing a seatbelt.
