AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -- Crews responded Monday to a diesel fuel spill at an office building in Auburn Hills.

Fire Deputy Director James Manning says an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel spilled and entered a storm drain at RGIS, located at 2000 Taylor Road. Manning says the spill likely started over the weekend and wasn't noticed until Monday morning.

A valve on a backup generator failed, FOX 2's Taryn Asher was told, which triggered the spill.

Half of the RGIS building was evacuated due to the strong fumes.

Manning says no evidence suggests the fuel leaked into the public sanitary system.

The Oakland County Hazardous Materials team was activated and responded to the scene.

The fuel appeared to be completely contained later that evening. It first drained into the company's storm drain, then into a retention base. Cleanup is still expected to take days.

The cold temperatures worked with clean up crews, as the fuel was not able to soak into the frozen ground as it normally would.

Air and water quality testing will continue, as will the investigation to how the spill occurred.
