Phoenix police: 2 detained after gun shop break-in

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

An officer-involved shooting shut down the area around 19th Avenue and Colter Street after police say two men attempted to rob the Legendary Guns of the West, Inc. store around 4 a.m. Monday.

It was a close call for a Phoenix police detective after he was shot by a suspect allegedly involved in the robbery which took place in the Christown area.

"She could hear the officer saying "..you wanted to kill me like you were trying to kill me," stated Leslie Antunez, who says when her mother heard the shouting around 4 a.m., Anna Anrade looked out her window and down Colter Street and saw the officer with his gun.

"That point she saw the officer ready to shoot and it was about four to five shots."

"It was boom, boom, boom.. like they was aiming and firing," said Michael Casey, who was across the street.  He and Josie Casey panicked because it was happening so close -- too close -- her brother's trailer was hit by a bullet.

"Bullet hole hit right here.. right here is his refrigerator.. it actually stuck in his refrigerator," said Josie.

According to Phoenix police, two suspects allegedly broke into the vacant store next to the gun shop through a wall, which triggered an alarm.

When officers arrived at the scene, they spotted the men, who were wearing masks and gloves inside the store, and then running out the back.  A detective followed.

"We understand a shot may have been fired by the suspect and then the officer fired several rounds," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.

Police say the gun store has been robbed before and people who live in the area confirm with three attempted break-ins, that is creating a lot of concern.

"Any kind of gunfire is like a warning to moms here," said Josie.

The police helicopter was launched, SWAT was called in and part of 19th Avenue was closed as officers searched for a potential getaway driver.

A gun was recovered near the scene and police are working to determine if it was stolen from the store or left by the suspects.

No officers were injured.

One of the suspects claimed his hand was injured during shooting, but that hasn't been confirmed, according to Crump.

Two suspects were taken into custody.  Police have not released their names or a description of the third suspect.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
